Time to Take off

Time to Take off

Posted by Jennifer Clair on

We all have those things on our to-do list that we put off day by day, week by week. One of these things was to write this journal entry. Writing brings me such joy and peace, but it takes the right frame of mind. It’s easy to reconnect and reach a creative state, but it is necessary to prioritise the time.

We often give ourselves a hard time for not accomplishing everything we need to do, yet we forget the importance of taking precious moments to recharge. When I do remember to prioritise ‘me’ time, the creativity flows freely. So here I am, finally checking it off my list, sitting by the beach in Miami, gazing out at the sea, rippling with slivers of sunshine.

I’m often asked where I get my inspiration. I typically reply that it's from nature, architecture, art, and travel, which is true, but it’s more subjective than that. Creativity comes naturally, from a peaceful place within. The sound of the ocean, the feel of the warm breeze against my skin, the scent of sunscreen and sea salt— inspiration comes from more than just the visual. It’s a state of mind that opens your eyes and clears the cloud of busy thoughts that often overwhelm us.

I travel a lot for my work, as my clients are primarily international. I always take the opportunity to absorb these experiences. They allow me to be creative while also learning about different cultures, which helps me design better and more consciously for the women I create for.

It’s impossible to pick a favourite country, because each one is too unique to compare. So instead, I’ll share some of my favourite moments from my travels.

In India, I found myself mesmerized by the vibrancy that fills every corner. The bright hues of the temples, the intricate jewellery, and the delicate fabrics - the entire country seems to pulse with colour. I’ll never forget my visit to the Taj Mahal; the way the marble shimmered in the sunlight, reflecting not just light, but also a sense of timeless beauty. India is a land of contrasts, of spirituality and opulence, and it gave me a profound appreciation for the artistry and symbolism behind every detail.

Morocco was another unforgettable journey, where the stark beauty of the Atlas Mountains stood in striking contrast to the bustling souks below. The markets, alive with colour, conversation, and the aroma of spices, were a maze of discovery, with intricate rugs piled high at every corner and hidden trinkets waiting to be treasured. The rugged Atlas Mountains, with their dramatic terrain, harmonized perfectly with the colourful chaos of the city. Morocco reminded me of the power of contrasts - how nature and human creation can coexist and elevate one another.

Qatar is one of my favourite places I’ve had the joy of traveling to for my work. The country’s unique ability to blend tradition with modernity creates a sense of calm and timeless beauty. I love the mix of traditional and modern architecture, especially the National Museum, designed as a desert rose - it’s a bold celebration of nature on an extraordinary scale. I am also drawn to the intricate traditional details, like the carved wooden doors and the exquisite pearl jewellery. What inspires me most about Qatar is its family-oriented culture - one that cherishes and celebrates life’s precious moments.

Every country I’ve visited leaves its mark on my soul, each adding a new layer of richness to my creative process. The textures, colours, sound, and smell - each element is intertwined into the designs I create. I draw inspiration not only from what I see, but also from the spirit of each place. Travel isn’t just about the destinations; it’s about the moments of connection, the quiet observations, and the slow breaths that allow me to take in the world from a place of stillness.

To design, it's essential to understand not just the aesthetics of a culture, but its heart and soul. A couture dress is not just the fabric it's made from; it's a narrative woven into every detail. Every journey I take deepens my understanding of the stories I want to tell through my work.

The women I design for come from all around the world, each with unique backgrounds - from the Middle East to America, from Europe to Asia. Not only is it important to design with culture in mind, but I truly enjoy immersing myself in these cultures. This understanding allows me to build very personal relationships with my clients, which I believe is at the heart of why my creations bring them joy. It's through these connections - understanding their personal stories, values, and traditions - that I can create couture pieces that feel uniquely theirs. This sense of personal connection is something that sets my brand, Jennifer Clair, apart. It’s the reason why I believe my clients are as happy with their couture as they are with the experience and service we provide.

So, wherever I am in the world - whether surrounded by nature or immersed in the history of an intricate temple - I am reminded of the infinite sources of inspiration that surround us, if only we take the time to truly see them.

Each journey, each encounter, adds another layer to my understanding of the world. Creating connections with different cultures, listening to stories, learning and exploring—these all shape the very heart of my work. I hope that, through each creation, the women who wear Jennifer Clair feel not just the craftsmanship, but also the soul of these travels woven into every stitch.

With love,

Jennifer Clair
